Spotlight Nomination Form

Spotlight Nomination-What is it?

The United Way Volunteer Center is continually reaching into the community to promote volunteerism in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. One method of doing this has been our Recognition Spotlight that honors a special individual or group that has been spreading goodwill in the community. We also honor area businesses that promote community engagement within their workplace through our Business Neighbor award.  All nominees are kept in the pool for 6 months and the nomination year runs from April to March.

We would like to invite you to participate in our Recognition Spotlight. By nominating those that serve their community, you can show appreciation for the hard work they contribute to making our community a better place to be. Each month a Volunteer of the Month is recognized by a surprise “Rally of Recognition” where the special individual receives a gift certificate for lunch for two at a local eatery, a balloon bouquet, a Live United t-shirt and a framed certificate denoting their award. Volunteer Groups of the Month receive a balloon bouquet and a framed certificate. Time is also spent reflecting as a group on the impact made through their efforts. The Business Neighbor of the month is also presented a framed certificate to hang in their place of business. All of these honorees are highlighted in the local media.

Thank you to Cup of the Day for supplying the gift certificates for our Individual winners!

Please join us as we honor those that go the extra mile and make our community a better place to be.Simply submit the Nomination Form to the United Way office. Nominations are reviewed monthly at regular Advisory Committee meetings.

For 64 years the Homemakers of Drummond Island have been providing community service to organizations, events, and individuals - a list that is too enormous to mention. No other organization has had such an impact on the island or has been as successful for such a long period of time.

In recent years Hospice of the EUP has had the distinct pleasure of benefiting from the success of these dedicated women. Women who are far from being just Homemakers and Housewives – almost 100 percent are involved in other occupations and volunteer for other organizations. Some of these women find themselves tackling jobs they never thought possible, or uncovering talents they never dreamed they possessed. For the past two years the Homemakers have sponsored a dinner in January, an evening of dancing, games, an auction, and their famous 21 foot buffet. Over 100 community members gather each year for this now annual event for Hospice of the EUP, which has raised nearly $7,000 towards the “Building A Dream” campaign.

Just like the many other area organizations, Hospice of the EUP is truly grateful, and can't thank these women enough for the compassion, commitment, and care.

Individual - Charlotte Folkersma

Charlotte Folkersma has won the July Individual of the Month through United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Charlotte was nominated by Hospice House of the EUP.

Charlotte is an amazing young woman who came to Hospice one afternoon with the idea of organizing a 5k run/walk for the Hospice House. In less than two months her enthusiasm and energetic spirit started to spread like wildfire. With the support of the War Memorial Nurses Association, 220 runners, walkers, people pushing baby strollers, and even those walking dogs came out to support the cause, which raised $6,500.

For Charlotte it was more than raising money. "It was a time where everyone could take action, leave a legacy, and show their continuing support. Hospice focuses on quality of life and making the most of a patient's remaining time. As a healthcare provider, I am devoted to seeing success in all efforts for making Hospice House a place where families can come together, knowing their loved ones were taken care of with respect, love, and honor."

Charlotte packed an unbelievable number of hours into planning the 5k in just a short period of time. The organization from start to finish was amazing. Even the race participants were favorably impressed with the quality of the event and look forward to this being an annual race. And on the day of the race with only three hours of sleep, Charlotte still had a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eyes.

But what is outstanding about this is that she goes above and beyond her duties as a lactation consultant, answering phone calls and texts throughout all hours of the day while maintaining a full time job. Moms who are unable to afford lactation services or whose insurance does not cover services are treated the same as moms who can and do, with no charge to the moms. Business Neighbor - Precision Edge

Precision Edge has won the June Business  Neighbor of the Month through United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Precision Edge was nominated by the Hospice of the EUP.

The management and employees of Precision Edge Surgical have supported our community in many ways for the past several years. They also support one another by holding fundraiser bake sales or potluck lunches with their employees Helping Hands Committee to help ease financial burdens or show support for colleagues.

Recently Hospice of the EUP became even more aware of Precision Edge's profound support for others. When employee Pam was diagnosed with cancer, the Precision Edge family rallied around her with white ribbons, cancer support bracelets, t-shirts in her favorite color purple, and a bake sale to help her through her illness. Pam was a fighter with a positive attitude and they supported her every step of the way with love and the color purple. Pam encouraged all of them with her upbeat, sparkling personality.

Sadly, on March 2, 2012 surrounded by family and friends in the comfort of the Hiland Cottage Hospice House of Petoskey, Pam lost her battle to cancer. The employees of Precision Edge wanted to do something to remember Pam. On Friday, March 30th, they held a bake sale with the company promising to match the donations collected.

If the Hospice House had been ready, Pam would have been across the street from the plant and her friends she worked with for so many years. In addition to the $10,000 previously pledged to the Building a Dream campaign, the Precision Edge Surgical family was honored to make another donation from the bake sale, in the amount of $1,900 in Pam's name for the Memory Wall in the new Hospice House.

Group - Girls on the Run of the EUP

Girls on the Run of the EUP has won the May Group of the Month through United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Girls on the Run was nominated by Cindy Merkel.

Girls on the Run of the EUP (formerly GOTR of Chippewa County) is a privately funded, all volunteer organization focused on building a healthier community, one girl at a time! The program's mission is to educate and prepare preteen girls for a lifetime of healthy living and respect. The ten week, fee-based program, offered each spring at sites throughout the Easter Upper Peninsula, mixes running activities with self-esteem building lessons. Meeting twice weekly, 3rd - 5th grade girls learn about goal setting, about how it is okay to be just the way they are, about becoming part of a team, and about giving back to the community. Each lesson mixes age appropriate self-esteem building lessons with running activities. Each season culminates with the program's 5K Celebration, an untimed event where the girls run/skip/walk at a pace that's right for them; achieving the goal they set for themselves at the start of the season - completing a 5K. At Girls on the Run, every girl finishes number one!

Since its first season, spring 2009, GOTR-EUP has served almost three hundred girls. From 2009 through 2011 over 50 volunteers have committed 2,100 hours to coaching Chippewa County's preteen girls. This spring, 29 volunteers coached 90 girls which by the day of the program's 5K celebration, on May 19th, meant another 1000+ hours had been dedicated to building a healthier community, one little girl at a time. Additionally the Council's behind-the-scene operations accounts for another 300+ hours annually of volunteer time.

In addition to its coaches and Council Director, GOTR-EUP has a dedicated Board that guides the Council in its friend raising and fund raising. This June the board put on its 3rd Annual Summer Solstice 5K Fun Run. The family oriented, festive-filled event is the Council's annual fund raiser, filling the gap between the actual cost of running the program and fee collected. The GOTR Board purposely keeps the program fees low in hopes of encouraging families from all income levels to participate. Girls on the Run is a positive and powerful life-changing program that not only impacts the girls but the grownups too!

ECA has one full-time administrative assistant and one part-time bookkeeper. “ Approximately 166 volunteers donated time and expertise to the ECA during 2011.

The ECA presents approximately 60 events annually; without volunteers to organize and staff these events, they simply could not happen. Volunteers are involved in every aspect of the organization. In addition to the volunteer Board of Directors, volunteers are responsible for a variety of duties that ensure day to day operations and events are successful. Volunteers are responsible for everything from building and grounds maintenance, to clerical assistance, to performing in events (e.g., Follywood, Yooper Home Companion), to imagining and planning events.

Many volunteers assist with multiple projects throughout the year, accumulating numerous hours of donated time. Other volunteers assist with a particular event or two for a few hours. Whether for a few hours or hundreds of hours, our volunteers have been critical to our success, historically, and will continue to be so in the future.

In the fiscal year of 2010-2011, approximately 8000 people enjoyed the programs and classes offered by the ECA. We have a volunteer who developed and manages a volunteer database. Through that effort, we have documented 4200 hours of volunteer time, and suspect this is a conservative estimate, as many volunteers fail to report hours of work. Some volunteer job assignments require a specific skill or experience. For example, one volunteer is responsible for our grant writing and another is acting as the Project Manager for the construction on the lower level of the ECA building. Other assignments require “on the job training” and are open to most anyone. These assignments might include ticket and concession sales or table, chair, stage, and dance floor setup.

As a non-profit organization, ECA has made a tremendous impact on the Curtis community and surrounding area. Cultural related events and activities have augmented other community events. For example, two years now the ECA has joined in the activities for the Curtis Winter Carnival. This year a family musician provided entertainment for children and families during the day. In addition, the spin-off economic impact the events have created has offered a financial boost to the Curtis area and surrounding businesses. Recognizing the importance of the ECA to the area, the Manistique Lakes Area Tourism Bureau has provided generous financial support for advertising and marketing of ECA events.

Group - Breakfast on the Farm Volunteers

The Breakfast on the Farm Volunteer Group has won the November Group Volunteer of the Month award through the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Spotlight Recognition Program. Nominated by Michelle Walk, the volunteers really were the stars of the Breakfast on the Farm event! There were nearly 140 volunteers for the event, held on September 17, 2011 and put on by MSU Extension, to increase awarenes about today's modern food production and the families who provide safe and wholesome food for those in Michigan and beyond. Tasks included set up, helping serve breakfast, answering questions at stations, parking, emptying trash and cleaning up, and tearing everything down after the event.

Excellent feedback was given about how organized the event was. While the event coordinator and committee did work very hard to ensure a successful event, it could not have happened without the volunteers. Many of the volunteers attended an orientation earlier in the week, were at the farm by 7am the day of the event, and then worked the entire event. Over 1,000 people attended Breakfast on the Farm, not including the volunteers – so their help was critical in ensuring an issue free event.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make Breakfast on the Farm a huge success, and for giving to your community!

Individual - Tracy Menard

Tracy Menard has been selected as the September Individual Volunteer of the Month through the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Nominated by Kristina Beamish, Tracy Menard poses a wonderful asset to both Sault Area High School and our local community.

The following is Menard's nomination, written by Beamish:

Tracy Menard is not only an excellent teacher in her field at Sault Area High School, she is a shining example to all of the students she comes into contact with of how to reach out and make the world a better place.  Tracy has implemented service learning within her classroom over the past three years and has truly become a force for students to gain a greater understanding not just of the classroom content she is accountable to provide, but also the community in which these students live.  She began with implementing service learning in her psychology class by arranging for students to serve volunteer hours at 5 local organizations, Community Action Head Start, Freighterview, Salvation Army, the Animal Shelter and Meridian Heights.  Students learned of the many ways in which interaction and environment play a role in the mental health of area residents.  Seeing that the students were gaining so much from the experience, Tracy took her leadership to the next level and transported students to a service learning camp downstate where they learned how to become leaders in their schools to bring service to an even greater scale.  These students returned from camp and formed what is now Students United, a premier group of high school students whose sole charge is to make their community a greater place.  They have performed dozens of projects that benefit the community, all the while setting an example and leading their peers to take part and enjoy the journey of serving others.  Recently, Tracy and her group raised money to bring an experience called Challenge Day to Sault High.  This entailed three days of activity that involved much planning to bring this group from California to our community.  Not only was it an incredible feat to raise the funding to do so (over $13,000) but they also touched the lives of over 400 students and adults in a way that breaks down barriers of stereotyping, bullying, isolation.  Although Tracy has not acted alone in these wonderful efforts, I am nominating her as the individual volunteer of the month as a show of respect and honor to the true catalyst that has begun to create a culture of service in the community for our young people.  Since Challenge Day, there has been a Facebook page where students who participated can post their thoughts and sentiments for others to read and share.  Many of the students are sharing painful issues such as family divorce, abuse, and social isolation that have kept them from reaching their potential in society.  Although it cannot be measured what a difference this is making on the community, it must be agreed that to provide an outlet for our young people talk about what is bothering them is surely a welcome platform.  Without Tracy’s leadership and commitment to helping all students learn about their community and begin to care about it and actively participate in it, many of these youth might have never realized they are not alone facing the issues that they are.  Tracy IS a paid teacher at Sault High but her efforts go well beyond that in the classroom and she deserves to be recognized for her stellar leadership and the momentum toward making a difference she has brought to life in Sault High.

Thank you Tracy for all you do!

The following is a nomination letter for Students United, written by nominator Tracey Holt to the Volunteer Advisory Committee, who select the monthly winners for the Spotlight Recognition program:

Dear Committee Members:

On behalf of Hospice of the EUP we would like to nominate Students United, for the United Way of the EUP Spotlight Recognition.

For the past year our hospice has had the distinct pleasure of working with these outstanding students under the guidance of Tracy Menard, teacher at Sault Area High School. During this time we have been favorably impressed by their positive work ethic, in addition to their commitment and dedication to the program, especially most recently with their participation with Hospice of the EUP's 30th annual recognition dinner. They have also spent several hours assisting us with the Skating For A Reason Hockey Tournament held over a three-day weekend. And with our Annual Bike Fest where they sit and provide refreshments at various check points for up to five hours, very early on a Saturday morning, which is often cold and windy.

For our organization it is a wonderful feeling to see how each of these fine young students, freely give of their time to make a difference in their community. Despite the demands with their current academic and extra curricular activities, these students always have a positive and professional attitude and are always willing to help. It doesn't matter if it is on the weekend or evening hours, Students United always makes an extra effort to do whatever is asked of them.

We truly hope you will consider Students United for this recognition. There is no doubt in our minds that they will wholeheartedly continue to be a valued asset to Hospice of the EUP and the community.

Sincerely,

Tracey E. Holt
Executive Director

Business Neighbor - Main Street Cafe

Main Street Cafe (owner Iris Jarvi) has been selected as the September Business Neighbor of the Month through United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. The following is an excerpt from the nomination form written for Iris by the Stalwart Fair Board:

She is always ready to help any organization she knows needs help.  As her suggestion in 2010 she knew Stalwart Fair no longer received support from the state for keeping their fair updated and going.  She suggested to Marc she would like to do a fund raiser for the fair.  She would donate l/2 of the proceeds taken in at her restaurant to the fair, some of her employees donated their time, and also some of our members donated their time waitressing, dishwashing, and cleaning up.  She also allowed us to do a silent auction, 50/50 draw, and sell our shirts and hats.  She and the fair board were very pleased with the results, and we were able to install a wash rack for animals on the grounds.  She informed us she would like to do this fundraiser every year if possible.  In 2011 she again did this for us; again the results were great.

Iris is a very humble lady, and has graciously helped other individuals in need, and many other organizations.  In speaking with Jim Miller from Pickford Fire Department and Ambulance [she goes above and beyond, she is ready to help saying “I can’t do what you are doing but I can help"].  In speaking with Melanie Greenfield of the Pickford Library, she echoed the same "she has helped us in so many ways".  Others in the area agree.

Individual - John Gilbert

John Gilbert was selected as the June Individual Volunteer of the Month through the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Nominated by Geraldine Stelmaszek of the EUP Community Dispute Resolution Center, Gilbert has helped in our local community in a very unique way. Gilbert assisted both the EUP CDRC and the Chippewa Theater Guild by directing their play, "The Nifty Fifties". This increased public awareness in the community about both organizations which resulted in an increase of mediations, volunteers, and potential supporters. John directed this play, practiced his heart out, created and ran media as well as public service announcements for advertisement. This was all to promote the event and the work of our local non profit organizations. Thank you John for all you do!

Bill Scheerer has been selected as the May Individual Volunteer of the Month by the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Nominated by the Community Health Access Coalition (CHAC), Bill has shown support in the community as a whole. A Wood Shop  teacher at Newberry High School, Bill takes his dedication a step further. The EUP Great Start Parent Coalition has been selected as the May Volunteer Group of the Month by United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Nominated by the Community Health Access Coalition (CHAC), the EUP Great Start Parent Coalition hosted Gerber Night in December of 2010, with the focus being on nutrition. The first 15 families with infants or pregnant moms received an insulated Gerber goody bag that included samples of baby food, baby yogurt, juice boxes, a bib, and information on nutrition for infants and toddlers. They also provided dinner to the attendees. Crafts were available for the children, and there was a local Breastfeeding Peer counselor available to answer questions. The EUP Great Start Parent Coalition has been a great asset to the local community, and CHAC felt they were very deserving of this award.

Business Neighbor - International Bridge Authority

The International Bridge Authority has been selected as the May Volunteer Business Neighbor of the Month through the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Nominated by Phil Becker, the Authority's General Manager, this group has showed true volunteerism. Every year since 2006 the staff at the International Bridge Administration (IBA) has participated in a dress down day each Friday during which staff are allowed to wear street clothes vs. their traditional uniform clothing. Participating staff donate a $2 minimum, which goes into the “IBA Christmas Project Fund”.

The IBA has bridge maintenance and operational responsibility for the bridge assets in MI and Canada via a joint intergovernmental agreement. Accordingly, the IBA staff of 33 consists of both Canadian and US citizens.  Therefore, donations received are split between human service agencies in Sault, MI and Sault Ontario, Canada. The money collected is distributed to agencies in early December to help those in need during the Christmas season. The staff have donated a total of $6,334 to agencies.

Agencies that have received money are:

Women In Crisis Center (Canada)

Phoenix Rising Women's Center (Canada)

Michigan Department of Human Services, Chippewa County (U.S.A.)

Dianne Peppler Resource Center (U.S.A.)

Salvation Army, Sault Ste. Marie, MI (U.S.A.)

Individual- Emma Borgerding

Emma Borgerding was chosen as the Individual Volunteer of the Month for April through the United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Emma was nominated by the EUP Learning Center. Emma agreed to serve on the Board of Directors for the EUP Learning Center. After completing a board audit, it was noted that the learning center was lacking a representative from the 18-25 age bracket. Emma gladly accepted the offer to join. She has not only been faithful in meeting attendance, but has always gone above expectations for providing ideas, concerns, and suggestions for work in the Eastern U.P.

In addition to volunteering her time for board membership, Emma developed a recycling program for the EUPLC. Emma purchased the containers, labeled them, and gave explanation to all of the staff for use. Every week she takes all of the bins back to the recycling center in the Sault and continues to encourage everyone to participate in the effort.

Emma is a Junior at LSSU and a member of the Rho Chi Omega sorority. She is an outstanding example of Living United and provides an exemplary role for others to follow.

Business Neighbor- Elks Lodge #1705

The Elks Lodge #1705 has won Volunteer Business Neighbor for the month of April through United Way of the Eastern Upper Peninsula's Spotlight Recognition Program. Nominated by the Community Health Access Coalition (CHAC), Elks Lodge #1705 is one of the most active businesses in the Newberry area. Many fundraising events and benefits are held at the Newberry Elk Lodge. By only charging local organizations a minimal fee to use the facility it decreases the expenses for such events, thus creating more profit for the fundraisers.

Some organizations that utilize the Newberry Elks Club are the Community Health Access Coalition (CHAC), the Tahquamenon Education Foundation, Newberry Goodfellows, Newberry Sports Boosters and Diane Peppler Resource Center.
